I learned the art of basket
twining from a remarkable artisan, Sanda Henny. of the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde in Oregon. Each basket is created
following the traditions I was taught; no knots, no glue, and listen to the "song of the basket". The song is the
spirit of the basket, how it wants to move and flow. When I begin a basket, I have a design in mind. At some point during
the twining, the basket will begin telling its own story-singing its song. I have learned to listen carefully and then eagerly
follow its flow until I have a finished piece. Living on the Oregon coast has enable me to listen in serenity, surrounded
by the peace and calmness of nature.

Explosion In
Color Materials: hemp and wool Size: 9-inch height, 6-inch base diameter, 10-inch top diameter Finding
fibers that contrast and complement each other at the same time is exciting and inspiring. The five different wool yarns I
selected for this basket just exploded into a beautiful form. Their colors and textures gently rose into a smooth rounded
bulb unexpectedly bursting into a rippled collar. This baskets was just plain fun to weave

Winter Storm at the Coast Materials: hemp, wool, and wooden beads Size: 5-inch height, 8-inch diameter
base. Snow at the Oregon Coast is a rare occurrence,
but when it happens it is remarkable. After walking on the beach covered in snow and watching the waves, mentally a basket
was forming with each step. I selected navy blue (ocean waves) and burgundy (sand) wool with “hairy” white (snow)
fibers. The base formed solid, strong and accented with brown wooden beads and then erupted into frothing white snow covered
by the crashing blue surf.

Ebb and Flow Materials: hemp and wool Size: 8-inch height, 10-inch diameter
base The flow
and motion of the ocean has always fascinated me. With this basket, I attempted to create that movement. When a basket is
woven, the weaving is done in a continuous circular motion. With this basket, I attemped something different by weaving small
sections at a time with a variety of all natural materials. Instead of a circular pattern, the sides move up and down in an
uneven flow but with a goal in mind-to reach the top. The ocean moves erratically-swirling, pulling, and pushing with the
goal of reaching land.

Spirals Materials: hemp, wool, and copper
wire Size: Inner
cylinder is 11 1/2" height, 5" diameter. Width of basket including outer layers is approximately 10" I love
spirals and found some luscious blue/purple/brown variegated yarn, so I had to combine the two. A narrow 5-inch cylinder in
blue stands erect with two layers of individually wound hemp, braided into groups of three twists around the cylinder. The
outer layer of twisting trios is threaded with copper wire.
